Siemens

This phone from Siemens is using DECT technology for wireless communication. It comes at a reasonable price, a long standby time and digital voice transmission. It is a very neat solution for home and office.

Features

The handset supports the basic call, which is a reasonable feature set if you are running in the office.

Beyond that feature set you cannot expect too much. We were not able to get message waiting working, and the SMS feature was not able to receive messages from the PBX. Trying to send out a SMS ended up in a message “Transferring SMS!” which did not go away, even after a power-cycle of the device.

Anyway, but this device is a great solution for mobile workers.

Setup

First, you need to determine the IP address of the device. You can do that my going into the menu, Settings, Base, VoIP Configuration (the default password is 0000). IP Configuration, IP Address. Then you can use your web browser to go to the device and set the account up from there.

In the telephony section, select the VoIP tab. You will find the usual settings for registering a SIP device.

  • The Authentication Name, Username and Display name should be set to your extension number.
  • The Authentication password should be set to your extension password
  • The Domain, Proxy server address and Registrar server should be set to your domain name. This setting does not really matter

if you use only one domain on the pbx and use the localhost domain name.

  • The Proxy server port and Registrar server port should be set to your PBX SIP UDP port, usually 5060.

The other settings should be set as described below.

  • Use random ports to increase your network security
  • Do not enable STUN, even if your device is behind NAT and the PBX is on a public IP address. The PBX will take care about NAT problem, and you don’t need support from the user agent.
  • The NAT refresh time does not matter, just leave it with the default setting
  • The Outbound proxy mode should be set to always.
  • Enter the IP address of the PBX in the Outbound proxy setting. Use the SIP UDP port number of the PBX for the Outbound proxy port.
  • Do not use Annex B for G729.
  • You should select all available codecs.

In the DTMF section, you should use the INFO method to transmit DTMF events. The RTP mode seems to be using inband DTMF, which is depreciated in the latest version of the PBX. Therefore it is better to use the INFO method.

You should leave the Dialling Plans unchanged unless you want to implement a specific behaviour. Better use the dial plan in the PBX to determine which way you want to terminate your traffic.
